Welcome to the blog of The Mercenary Pen! In the coming days and weeks I plan to start rolling out posts about my own historical research, currently pertaining to the Marshal family of thirteenth-century England; advice for writers and researchers pursuing publication in academic journals; updates about a not-so-top-secret digital medieval history resource project for the Pacific Northwest that I have underway; and more (I’m keeping my options open).
Ultimately, the purpose of this blog is to share information about the people and times I love to research and to provide tips and resources that I hope are genuinely useful to other writers and researchers.
Who am I? As you may already know from the “About” page on this website, I am a historian with a BA and an MA in medieval history from Portland State University, but I work in the field of social service doing research, publications, and a smattering of other things, including taking the recycling out. When I am not working on projects for The Mercenary Pen, I do things on the weekends, but I am not sure what they are. Other interests of mine that I never seem to have time for, if I keep the list short, are archery and painting. Warning: paintings may one day appear on this blog.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions about anything that appears here or on the rest of the website.
